FRANK AUERBACH
“Auerbach would start one piece, and work so hard with so much passion, so involved, until he gets tired, exhausted, it’s late, so he goes back home. And next day, he comes back, and is disappointed. 'It wasn’t as good as I thought!' Too bad, he gets angry, he scrapes off the paint, and begins again! He does it all the time, all year. He is similar to Giacometti and Kossoff in that sense, except Giacometti works all in black and white, and Kossoff has the expressionistic quality, whereas Auerbach is a master at using color to express emotions.”
